CARE MORE
While hand-washing; start by filling the container with cold water. Add just a pinch of non-toxic / acid and phosphate free laundry powder, and dip the piece in for a maximum of 5 minutes. Do not twist and squeeze on removal, instead lay it flat on the rack to dry. Never put the piece in a dryer or leave it out in the sun to dry.
You can steam or flat iron this piece with no difficulty. It’s not super prone to wrinkling but that doesn’t mean it’s wrinkle-free. The best way to travel with Obataimu is with a pocket steamer. Once you invest in one, you will never travel without it.
If you must insist on washing it in the machine, put it in a laundry bag with the machine setting on a cold water quick spin and a pinch of detergent.
If you prefer to leave it to the professionals, just give it to the dry-cleaners and it will come back perfectly.
CONCEPT + PROCESS
A cotton t-shirt fabric that is 100% cotton, yet has a smooth finish like a ceramic glaze. We wanted its appearance to be substantial yet supple: “think clay!” Applying an enzyme glaze to the fabric once it was dyed helped us achieve something close to the sensation of a mud-bath. exchanges
THE HIM–HER–THEY COLLECTION IS A MADE-TO-ORDER + NO STOCK MODEL WORKING TOWARDS A NO-WASTE FUTURE.
Exchanges and returns, across cities and countries, invariably means an accumulation of stock.
THEREFORE WE CANNOT OFFER EXCHANGES.
For this reason many of our styles are loose fitting and easy for you to size. To avoid the desire for a return we have carefully created a sizing and styling guide customised for each product. If you are still hesitant about sizing online, we encourage you to reach out to us on team@obataimu.com offline with a standing photograph of yourself—to help us personally guide you to pick the correct size.
LENGTH
We want to make clear that our Body Length / Sleeve Length selector simply gets you closer to your length (but it is not exacting as it caters to an entire height category).
COLOR
We want to make clear there may be a 5-10% variation between the color you see on the screen to the color of your piece. For us, this is part of the charm of our hand-dyed human process.
returns and refunds
At Obataimu each piece is made to order; hand-dyed, hand-treated, hand-cut and sewed by one tailor from start to finish (no assembly line). Each order is meticulously processed and checked for quality before it is shipped out. In the off chance that you receive the wrong shipment or a piece with a manufacturing defect—reach out to us at team@obataimu.com and we will help you find a solution.

sustainability
Fashion overproduction is a real threat to our planet. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that discarded textiles and yard trimmings coming out of the United States make up 17.9% of total solid waste (MSW) that end up in landfills across the globe (2018).
We want to switch gears from the one-click shopping culture to more thoughtful consumption, keeping air pollution from e-commerce in consideration too. While the shipping industry is essential to the world’s economy and well-being, we are aware of its contributing factors on the global greenhouse gas emissions that are released into our atmosphere. Every year, the shipping industry is responsible for approximately 2.89% of CO2 gases emitted globally. This may seem low to you now, but by the year 2050, it is said to increase up to 130% (4th IMO GHG study, 2018). We are trying to work with you to help the global fashion model find a new way. Our no assembly line, no stock model is more expensive for us, but more considerate towards the planet.

CONCEPT + PROCESS
Termites build their mounds using an extremely sophisticated understanding of ventilation. Engineers have been in awe of this design system since they discovered it. These creatures manipulate the openings and closings on the surface facade of their mounds, to ensure that they are perfectly cool on the inside when it is hot, and warm on the inside when it is cold. Fascinated by this, we decided to try and apply this logic to a madras mul-mul fabric to make it something you could live in all year round. (click to read more)

CONCEPT + PROCESS
While cotton and linen have similarities: the common misconception is that linen is a kind of cotton. Linen is actually made from the flax plant, not from cotton. Belgian and Italian linen are richer than Indian linen, while Indian cotton has unique and highly desirable feeling compared to many other cottons across the world. We decided to blend just a touch of Indian linen into a cotton base to create a hybrid of the two. (click to read more)

CONCEPT + PROCESS
We sought after the slinkiness of silk with the weight and texture of cotton. A masculine matte sheen yet with a feline quality. So we box the fabric in a bio-vapor after it is dyed—like a sauna that totally relaxes it, releasing all the tension in its binds. The result is a fabric that embodies the decadent spirit of a fetishist’s midnight feast. (click to read more)
How To Care For Versatile Khadi

Steam-clean at home, and then dry-clean after a few wears. We suggest doing it for 5 to 10 minutes, to remove the odour and bacteria. If the piece has perspiration marks, or if you stain it—dry cleaning is the only way to go. Do not attempt to remove the stain yourself at home.
CONCEPT + PROCESS
Khadi is symbolic of India’s independence movement. A pure cotton still spun by hand on a wheel, it is usually crisp and slightly coarse. We have always loved the stiff look and deep cultural associations of Khadi—yet wondered how we could take a contemporary approach to it. We wanted a flexible Khadi so that we could play with the fabric in a wider range of patterns beyond saris, dhotis and the Indian style Kurta Pajamas. (click to read more)

How To Care For Naked Slub
This is a viscose and polyester blend knit, designed to feel like a second skin to the body. We have been very careful not to cross the 4% limit of elastane / polyester in the blend—ensuring that it will at least still de-compose on its own, while keeping micro-plastics to a minimum. It is machine washable but only using a laundry bag with the machine setting on a cold water quick spin. It can be hand-washed in cold water—not just because it wastes less water but also because it preserves our enzyme-treatment better.
Obataimu fabrics are a bit like lovers. They are complicated to care for but if you treat them right, they will stay with you long, and reward you in many ways. You can steam or flat iron this piece with ease—it is not super prone to wrinkling. The best way to travel with Obataimu is with a pocket steamer. Once you invest in one, you will never travel without it.
If you couldn’t be bothered to fuss over it, just give it to the dry-cleaners and it will come back perfectly.

Functional work-wear or sleepwear need to be thought through ergonomically. Obataimu also designs furniture and so we spend a lot of time contemplating ergonomics and ‘resting positions’. How To Care For Your Adult Swaddle
Our Adult Swaddle is double-sided; the first layer is Aeromul (100% cotton), and the second layer is Naked Slub (a blend of polyester and viscose). It is never meant to be discarded. It is easy to mend, dry-clean only and will last you forever if you take care of it. Keep in mind it ages like wine and is to be cherished and passed on like an heirloom.
FOR LONGEVITY, DO NOT MACHINE-WASH THIS PIECE.
We strongly recommend you dry-clean only.
However, if you are somewhere where you absolutely cannot dry-clean, lost in depths of a forest, you can hand-wash it in cold water! While hand-washing; start by filling the container with cold water. Add just a pinch of non-toxic / acid and phosphate free laundry powder, and dip the piece in for a maximum of 5 minutes. This inbred lattice technique is made in our soft Cloud Cotton, a 100% cotton knit with the hand-feel of your favorite t-shirt. As one of the most intricate techniques in the Obataimu family, we urge you to treat it with care.

how to care for this technique
This technique is made in our Womb Waffle, a 100% cotton waffle knit with the hand-feel of your favorite sweatshirt. We cut up little squares of fabric and create individual stripes to resemble blocks that we then sew together, by stitching one block at a time. This is an elaborate process—a sculptural take on embroidery.
As one of the most intricate techniques in the Obataimu family, we urge you to treat it with care.
STEAM CLEAN ONLY :

In tandem with our ethos, the elastane content falls below 5%, ensuring that it will still de-compose on its own, while keeping micro-plastics to a minimum. This is an elaborate process—a sculptural take on embroidery.
As one of the most intricate techniques in the Obataimu family, we urge you to treat it with care.
STEAM CLEAN ONLY :
1. It’s best to do this yourself at home with a professional home steamer or pocket steamer if you are traveling.
2. If you do take it to a dry-cleaner, let them clearly know this piece CANNOT BE DRY-CLEANED but only steam-cleaned.
3. THIS CANNOT BE HAND-WASHED NOR CAN IT BE MACHINE-WASHED.
4. While steam-cleaning at home, we suggest doing it for a whole 10 minutes, as the point is not to iron it but to clean out all the odour and bacteria.
5. If you stain the piece, dab the spot that’s been stained with soap and water only. Do not wet the whole piece as wetting it will destroy the technique.
Each piece from Obataimu is enzyme-washed by hand, cut by our master and stitched specially for you by one tailor from start to finish. Our fabrics are a bit like lovers. They are complicated to care for but if you treat them right, they will stay with you long, and reward you in many ways.

how to care for this technique
This is a 100% satin silk woven fabric. It is not machine-washable nor can it be hand-washed. Along with delicate fabrics comes great responsibility. Treat this piece like an eternal part of your wardrobe and leave it to the professionals.
How to use and clean piece:
1. Steam-clean at home, and then dry-clean after a few wears.
2. While steam-cleaning with a professional home steamer or a pocket steamer if you are on the road—use the steamer not just to take out the creases (being delicate by birth, this fabric is prone to wrinkling) but to actually clean out the fabric. We suggest doing it for 5 to 10 minutes, to remove the odour and bacteria.
3. If the piece has perspiration marks, or if you stain it—dry cleaning is the only way to go. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE STAIN YOURSELF AT HOME.

This is a 96% modal (natural) and 4% elastane (polyester) blend knit. In tandem with our ethos, the elastane content falls below 5%, ensuring that it will still de-compose on its own, while keeping micro-plastics to a minimum. With the flexibility of a Yogi and a soft hand-feel, we urge you to either dry clean or hand-wash in cold water—not just because it wastes less water but also because it preserves our enzyme-treatment better.
Do not machine-wash this piece.

This inbred weaving technique is made in our soft Aeromul, a 100% cotton weave with the hand-feel of a cloud. We cut up strips of our aeromul fabric and create individual rope that we then weave together, in intricate patterns. This is an elaborate process—a sculptural take on embroidery.

How To Care For The Nightingale Dress
The Nightingale is double-sided; the first layer is Aeromul (100% cotton), and the second layer is Naked Slub (a blend of polyester and viscose).
Do not twist and squeeze on removal, instead lay it flat on the rack to dry. Never put the piece in a dryer or leave it out in the sun to dry.
If you couldn’t be bothered to fuss over it, just give it to the dry-cleaners and it will come back perfectly.

This is a 100% cotton knit and is one of the gentlest fabrics in the Obataimu family. We recommend you treat it with absolute care by either hand-washing or dry-cleaning the piece.

sustainability
Keeping all of this in mind, in order for us to work together, we urge you to please iron your piece before you try it on, and spend a little time with it in front of the mirror before you bid to exchange. Our no assembly line, no stock model is more expensive for us, but more considerate towards the planet.

If you must hand-wash; start by filling the container with cold water.

CONCEPT + PROCESS
We decided to develop a twill weave that has small air spaces making it warm without weight, while a zigzag herringbone surface gives it some texture. The result was our Cropped Cashmere—a 100% cotton that is brushed and trained to behave like cashmere. (click to read more)

All our fabrics are hand-dyed and bio-washed for softness. Click to read more about our fabrics.

how to care for this technique
This technique is made in our Womb Waffle, a 100% cotton waffle knit with the hand-feel of your favorite sweatshirt. We cut up little squares of fabric and create individual stripes to resemble blocks that we then sew together, by stitching one block at a time. This is an elaborate process—a sculptural take on embroidery.
As one of the most intricate techniques in the Obataimu family, we urge you to treat it with care.
STEAM CLEAN ONLY :
This inbred lattice technique is made in our soft Cloud Cotton, a 100% cotton knit with the hand-feel of your favorite t-shirt. We cut up t-shirt fabric and created individual rope that we then wove together, by stitching one strip at a time on top of the next. This is an elaborate process—a sculptural take on embroidery.
As one of the most intricate techniques in the Obataimu family, we urge you to treat it with care.
