Among the most important artists of the 20th century, Donald Judd was many things; from artist to sculptor to industrial designer, he spent his time on earth trying to break away from the trends of the industry. Even so, Judd was (and still is) widely associated with the significance of Minimalism in America. He viewed material and space as sacred, something to be conceived and invented. A versatile and pliable piece of property ready to bend at will.
Referring to himself as a maker of specific objects, Donald Judd had a vast sculptural vocabulary ranging from plywood and organic shapes to crafting straight lines and angles with Plexiglas. As time progressed, his work embraced construction, focusing on materiality. Donald Judd’s sculptures were almost exclusively based on the ‘box form’—a classic symbol of minimalism but complex in experience. These cuboids took on various forms over the years—‘stacks’, which are hung at even intervals from floor to ceiling; ‘progressions’, whose measurements follow simple numerical sequences; curvilinear protrusions from the wall; and box-like forms installed directly on the floor. All varying in color, material, scale, proportion and number.
Expanding on Donald Judd’s love for symmetry and geometry, we designed a bustier inspired by ‘the box’ to take on a form like no other. With a special technique of hand quilting, the base is quilted in an intricate grid like pattern, with the squares tightly packed for shape. Each panel is then cut with extreme detail, folded to contour along the body and tailored for ergonomic structure. This cuboid dream is an extension of Judd into the textile plane.
